“Out of the Shadow of Leprosy”

Claire Manes will be  the featured presenter as part of the on-going Speaker Series jointly hosted by The Lafayette Museum and The Lafayette Public Library System.  Claire Manes has been a teacher at the elementary, high school, college and adult level.  For most of her life, she searched for information and evidence of her grandfather who had died in Carville, Louisiana thirteen years before she was born.  There was no talk of him or his four siblings, all incarcerated in the Carville leprosrium between 1919 and 1977.  When letters from her grandfather were discovered, Claire found her grandfather and a personal project.  She returned to ULL for her doctorate and later wrote Out of the Shadow of Leprosy:  The Carville Letters and Stories of the Landry  Family.   She continues to teach as an adjunct instructor at ULL.

This FREE event is open to the public.  Seating is limited.  Doors open at 1:30 p.m.  Refreshments will be served.
